Galson Sciences Ltd - Geological characterisation and modelling
We have an internationally recognised 3D geological modelling expertise. GSL staff have extensive experience of field investigations in Europe, Asia, and North America, and laboratory investigations of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous petrology and mineralogy. In particular, we have been responsible for developing 3D geological models for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Dounreay (low-level waste, LLW, disposal project), Nirex (Sellafield site), and the Environment Agency, and for a wide range of other clients worldwide, using EarthVision and Vulcan geological modelling software and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These site models have been developed to support site characterisation and performance assessment programmes. Staff have worked on site characterisation and geological modelling projects in Finland, Sweden, Spain, Japan, the UK and the US, including development of site characterisation plans for the Dounreay site in connection with the LLW disposal project.
Our 3D geological modelling capability is illustrated below, which shows an interpretation of the geology and structures in the area of the proposed Dounreay LLW disposal facility.
Other examples include the development of integrated models of structure, hydrogeology, hydrochemistry and boreholes/drifts for the El Berrocal site (ENRESA), integrated models of geological studies at Maqarin (Nirex), modelling of Dounreay shaft and detailed modelling of metre-scale lithology across the site (UKAEA), structure and geochemistry of the Rokkasho LLW disposal site in Japan, and visualisation of potential LLW disposal sites in Italy (ENEA).
