Galson Sciences Ltd - Biosphere processes

GSL staff have experience in international biosphere modelling projects, such as BIOMOVS and BIOMASS (on behalf of Sandia National Laboratories, SNL, and the Environment Agency), and successor projects conducted under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including projects focused on near-surface waste issues (Improvement of Safety Assessment Methodologies, ISAM, and Application of Safety Assessment Methodologies, ASAM). On behalf of the Environment Agency, staff were responsible for reviewing British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL)'s approach to treatment of the geosphere-biosphere interface, dose-pathway-receptor issues, and dose to non-human biota for Drigg site. We have also worked for the Swedish regulators (the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority, SSI) in this area, with responsibility for detailed reviews of the Swedish Nuclear Waste Management Organization (SKB)'s approach to treatment of the biosphere in performance assessment (PA), and have advised SSI on the development of biosphere models. For the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Dounreay, we have compiled and evaluated monitoring data collected over the lifetime of the site, and have developed biosphere models of the Dounreay area for use in PA. Staff have extensive experience with development of dose models for current discharges and for potential future discharges from waste disposal facilities.
