Galson Sciences Ltd - Modelling
GSL staff have a strong modelling background. Staff have developed mathematical and computer models for a wide range of detailed processes, such as low-level waste (LLW) storage and disposal safety assessments, organic complexation, colloid transport, fluid flow in faults, and thermo-hydro-mechanical rock behaviour. GSL has experience in the modelling of the near-field, the far-field, and the biosphere. Under research programmes funded by the European Commission (EC), the Belgian National Radioactive Waste Management Company (ONDRAF), the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate (SKI), the French National Radioactive Waste Management Company (ANDRA), Nirex and the Environment Agency, GSL staff have been at the forefront of the development of models and computer codes to simulate contaminant transport. GSL staff have led major European initiatives in the modelling of organic complexation, sorption, colloid transport, and cement degradation. GSL staff were at the forefront of the incorporation of climate change into performance assessment (PA) modelling for the regulatory Dry Run 3 and Sellafield assessments. As part of model development, GSL has experience in the use of expert judgement and the conduct of expert elicitation exercises to parameterise those aspects of the system that are not/cannot be characterised readily. GSL has developed a framework for the use of expert judgement in PAs for the Swedish regulatory authorities, and has conducted expert elicitations on their behalf.
GSL staff are expert users of a number of bespoke in-house and commercial software tools in support of quantitative and qualitative studies. We have most experience with the use of GoldSim, Analytica and Excel for PA of disposal facilities, but staff have also used other PA codes, including Amber, Modelmaker, and PC CREAM, and a wide range of PA supporting codes.
An overview of key high-level tools employed in specific tasks is provided below:
