Galson Sciences Ltd - Policy and regulation

Our ability to understand the regulatory perspective and to respond effectively to specific requirements of the client is demonstrated through our previous work for proponents, regulators, and UK government departments.  For example:

  • For the Environment Agency, we acted as principal contractor for regulatory review of British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL)'s safety case for continued disposal at the national low-level waste (LLW) repository near Drigg.
  • A project for the Scotland and Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research (SNIFFER) involved the development and trial application of methodology for conducting radiological assessments of the disposal of radioactive wastes to Special Precautions Burial sites.
  • A project for the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) involved the development of a database of Scottish, UK and international legislation and regulation on radioactive substances for use by SEPA staff.
  • Work for the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) has involved provision of support for the development of the UK regulation on delicensing criteria.
  • Work for the Department of Transport and the Regions (DETR) involved provision of advice on risk assessment for marine pollution and on UK participation in OSPAR, the Oslo/Paris Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment on the North-East Atlantic.
  • Work in Sweden has involved development of a regulatory strategy for the treatment of future human actions in risk assessment for radioactive waste management, evaluation of the use of expert judgement in risk assessment, development of regulatory guidance on risk assessment, and review of proponent's assessments.
