Traceability and transparency are key aspects of building confidence in performance and risk assessments. Many criticisms of performance assessments (PAs) are a result of failure to find the relevant information or the difficulty in following the flow of information.
Part of the problem is caused by the documentation process:
- Documents give only one representation of, or structure to, a set of multi-relational information.
- Different documents are organised according to the different priorities of their authors (e.g., proponents, regulators, reviewers).
- Documents make it difficult to follow a forward evolution of information, i.e., by their nature, documents cannot refer forward to their successors.
To address the problems created by documentary presentation, and to facilitate information management in the future, GSL has developed information management systems and approaches for clients worldwide. For example, two initiatives were undertaken for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) project:
- The WIPP Compliance Baseline CD-ROM.
- The Research Data Management (RDM) system.
