GSL staff have developed decision-analysis procedures and tools for prioritising future strategies in the context of fields such as decommissioning strategies, reducing regulatory uncertainty, waste processing, storage, transportation and disposal, Integrated Waste Strategy (IWS) development, pollution sources, and risk communication. All of this work involves a mix of our technical capabilities in leading and conducting Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) / Best Practicable Means (BPM) assessments, and our experience in managing and facilitating stakeholder dialogue on the assessments.
Staff have also undertaken option studies of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near-field for Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), and an options study of potential backfills for the disposal of high-level waste (HLW) in Belgium, on behalf of ONDRAF/NIRAS. On behalf of the French regulators (ASN), we have reviewed French waste disposal options and concepts, and reviewed methods used worldwide for optimisation and decision analysis concerning the development of engineered disposal concepts.
A list of some of the key areas and projects in which we have carried out decision analysis and options studies is provided on the left.
